APPRENTICESHIP INFORMATION

Welcome to the Landscape/Irrigation, Sewer & Storm Drain Underground Industrial Piping Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee of Southern California. The Landscape/Irrigation, Sewer & Storm Drain Underground Industrial Piping Industry Training is a state-of-the-art training facility that offers construction related training to the United Association Local Union 345 Union members. This program is approved by the California Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS) and are recognized by the Department of Labor.


Minimum Qualification and Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age (at time of application)

  • Must be able to work under the supervision of a Journeyman.

  • Must be of good moral character work as a team and be physically able to perform the work of the trade.

  • Must abide by all rules and regulations set by the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee

The Apprenticeship Program is a five-(5) year training program. This program fulfills 9,000 hours of diversified on-the-job training. Apprentices earn while they learn, working the job with Journeymen. In addition, they attend classes or related technical instruction 1 Saturday a month for 5 years equivalent of 9000 hrs.


Apprentices earn a percentage of an established Journeyman wage rate including benefits, by classification.  All wage rates and conditions are subject to change as per the negotiated Collective Bargaining Agreement.  Wage advances are possible once a year per the apprenticeship terms.

Nature of Work

Work revolves around site development including the installation of irrigation sewer & storm industrial piping and other landscaping work construction projects. More specifically, the work includes digging trenches, installing pipes, fittings, valves, outlets, spray heads, and accessories; connecting the system to utilities; installing the electronic control system; backfilling trenches; seeding; sodding; and  establishment of trees, shrubs and ground cover.


Work is outdoors and may include installing metal, plastic, cement pipes and tubing. Layout of water pipes,tubing, irrigation and drainage systems, including computerized control systems. Multiple installationmethods, cutting, threading pipe, and join plastic pipe joints with solvent or fusion welds. Working conditions from dusty in dry weather, muddy wet seasons, Apprentices are required to use picks and shovels at times lifting very heavy loads, Apprentices should have a good physical stamina and be able to lift properly.

Tools Used

Proper and safe use of wrenches, saws, and other hand tools, various power equipment and machinery.

  1. Soldering, electrical fusion and Brazing, using the oxy-acetylene process.

  2. Picks and shovels, mechanical digging equipment such as Ditch Witch trenchers.

  3. Interpretation and layout of blueprints, ordering, Coordination of personnel and materials.

Where Employed

Commercial, industrial, manufacturing complexes, Golf Courses, Freeway landscaping and irrigation and
residential housing.

Working Conditions

Work is strenuous and may involve heavy lifting, pulling and pushing. It may require standing for long periods or being in cramped and uncomfortable positions.

Safety Issues Include

Training to assure OSHA occupation safety and health requirements, eliminate falls from ladders, cuts from sharp tools, injury from use of mechanical digging equipment and related work. Safety is stressed for all work related job duties, and safety training is provided for all apprentices for all duties performed.

  • Orientation / Introduction, Safety & First Aid

  • Basic Math & Science

  • Blue print Specification & Interpretation

  • Industrial Pipe and Irrigation systems

  • Copper & Acetylene Soldering & Brazing, solvent, gasket and electrical fusion sewer and storm.

  • Drainage, Sumps & Pumps

  • All related scopes Landscaping I

  • Cert. First Aid

  • All related scopes Landscaping II
